What is a Lutheran?A HERITAGE TO BUILD UPONOur Lutheran faith is rooted in the truths of the Bible itself, but the name 'Lutheran' dates back to the 16th century. It comes from a man named Martin Luther, who lived in Germany from 1483 to 1546. He recognized that the Church should rely on the Bible alone for its source of teachings. Bible-believing Lutherans still hold to this principle today. For a detailed explanation of what Bethany believes, teaches and confesses, click here. Luther struggled with the same basic problems that trouble people today. He longed for peace with God, for assurance and certainty. Unable to achieve this by his own good works, he found it in the Bible. When Luther discovered the love of God in Jesus Christ, he exclaimed, 'I felt myself to be reborn and to have gone through open doors into paradise.' At Bethany, these doors are open for all, including you. Below is the Second Article (paragraph) of the Apostle's Creed. This important confession of all Christendom reminds us of what Scripture teaches about God the Son.
(I believe) in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried. He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven and is seated on the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from there He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. In 1529, Dr. Martin Luther explained what the above paragraph means for you. This confession is just as true today. I believe that Jesus Christ is true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the Virgin Mary; and that He is my Lord. Who has redeemed me, a lost and condemned creature, purchased and won me from all sins, from death and from the power of the devil; not with gold or silver, but with His holy, precious blood, and with His innocent suffering and death; in order that I might be His own, live under Him in His Kingdom, and serve Him in everlasting righteousness, innocence and blessedness; even as He is risen from the dead, lives and reigns to all eternity. This is most certainly true.' A member of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod, which is in doctrinal fellowship with the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod.
